Technology is now taking a massive influence on all types of media conventions, we realised this and decided that when researching and developing our music video and digipak, we were going to heavily use a variety of all sorts of technology throughout the process. We used Blogger to post all of our coursework online, and when we were researching information we made sure that we took full advantage of the features it provides for audience research. We managed this by using tools such as Polls and Questionaires. These helped us decide which song to do, what style of video to do it in and even the events which should occur in our video. This helped us massively with our audience research.
Another website we used was Youtube, this helped us greatly when looking through song nd video clips for inspiration and ideas. The reason we prefered using Youtube for this is for many reasons. One of the main ones being that it has such a huge extensive range of music videos throughout all different music styles. Another is that the website has a very good system for rating videos and commenting on them, which is great for looking at our target audiences reactions and interests in certain videos.
We also used the internet when we were researching our song artist information, as well as information on other artists performing his same style of music. For this sort of research we found the website Wikipedia very useful. Also his own website and myspace gave us some reliable data.
When recording our video we used a Sony Handy Cam which was very easy to use and gave us good quality footage to work with. Once we had recorded the appropriate parts for the video we then captured to scenes onto 'Final Cut Express' and then used this for editing the footage together. We found this a very simple yet effective tool for doing such actions. Features we took advantage of this software included us being able to change the colour of the video, as well as altering the speed of the footage and adding scene transitions. These all added to a much more interesting, professional looking video.
When we were filming the video we also used a blue screen for the band shots. We were aiming to keep the same actor who was the main character and have him playing the different instruments individually. Then with the technology we were using put them all on the scenes together. This was a very time consuming and skillful process and although we did manage to succesfully achieve a few scenes with this we didn't achieve our full desired effect.
For our Digipak again we used a variety of different technologies. We started off by taking pictures with a digital camera, we then transfered these images onto a computer and used a piece of software called photoshop to edit them to get the effect we desired. This was quite an easy yet very effective piece of softwareto use, and perfect for what we wanted it to do.

Evaluation
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?
The main product is out music video. This contains mainly narrative based filming and some performanced based. Within the video there is just one character who plays both the actor within the story and all the band members; made possible by blue screen. The story line is of comic effect about the guy having a bad day, which is made worse by his girlfriend breaking up with him. The performance is also comic as the band members all wear different outfits and play the instruments.
The ancillary products are the poster and digi-pak in its entirety. The poster is an image of the main actor how looks happy even though there is a rain cloud over him. The picture of the actor is a real photograph where as the background and cloud has all be hand drawn on paintshop. I think this works well as it corrisponds with the comic effect from the video. The digi-pak front and back cover are the same as the poster, except the back cover is a reverse of the front. Within the digipak is the track list and place which will hold the CD. all of the inside is the same color as the back and front. we included the tracklist inside the digi-pak as the back cover is the reverse of the front.
The products work well together because the images on the poster and digi=pak work well against the video. The technology used to create the products include:

Evaluation - What have you learned from your audience feedback?
We made an audience questionnaire back towards the start of our project to get a good idea of what the audience wanted to see within our music video. The majority said that their favourite genre of music is pop music and so we decided to go for a song that would appeal to a very widespread audience. Our audience questionnaire gave us the idea for our music video because we were contemplating whether to have it as a literal video so we follow what he’s saying or have it completely storyline and the audience preferred the idea of a storyline music video.
We learnt that it’s not often people go out looking for the music video but people regularly go onto YouTube or music channels looking for the song, so we figured if it’s a popular song it’s going to be searched for often and people will be more likely to see our music video that will be published on various sites.
All of our audience said when they do watch a music video they enjoy it because they think it helps show the artist in a completely different way, I couldn’t agree with this statement anymore, I think listening to a song is one thing but to be able to experience that same song visually opens your mind to listen to that same song in a completely different way to just listening alone.
Through our audience feedback we have learnt that you can’t just pick what you want to see and what you think works well, you need to realise that it has got to suit everybody’s needs and what you might think looks good somewhere others may not. You’re trying to sell your media product to an audience. So you have to plan your shooting around your target audience’s needs and not your personal preference.
We got some good feedback off of our audience and I think this helped us collaborate all our ideas to come out with a spectacular finish, we asked our audience if they would want to see us challenge conventions of real media products and they said they would like to see this. We took upon the challenge of challenging ordinary conventions for instance we used normal everyday shooting locations which isn’t typically used in pop music videos as they are usually high class locations or un-realistic ones.
Overall I don’t think our final outcome would have been half as good if we hadn’t of got audience feedback at a few certain points during our project. It helped us change and edit bits that didn’t necessarily attract our target audience.
Evaluation
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
First of all the song is a pop song. so we decided to use some of the normal conventions of that to create our music video. with in out music video its is happy and upbeat which corresponds to the sound of the song. Its a very cheery song with a comic effect. the ways our video used the conventions of a real media products are as followed:
We challenged the forms of a real media product because the mis-en-scene within the video show normal everyday locations, something that isn't usually used in a pop video as they are usually high class locations or un-realistic ones. Some of the shots are in a public place with would be hard for a real music video to use, as they would probably attract lots of attention.
Within our music video we stuck within the norm conventions of a real media product. How ever we did deveolp it slightly in terms of our music video having more narrative over proformance in the product.

Digipak
Here is the spine for our digipak, we once again went for a simple design where we continued the blue colour theme and the font style from the rest of the designs. This means that all the aspecs of the digipak corresponds with each other and gives off a smart and professional look.
Digipak
This is the inside right sleeve for our digipak and this is where the disc will be situated. We again continued the theme of green grass banner at the bottom abd blue sky background to make it blend in with the rest of the pack. We also brought back the rain cloud to make it look like it's raining onto the disc. Where the disc will sit, behind is an imagine of a vinyl record, we once again left the design very minimal and simplistic and we think goes very well with the rest of the digipak. We experimented with various other designs including a more detailed vinyl, a sun instead of a record and different coloured records, but in the end we decided that this was the most effective and best looking.
Digipak
We decided to put the tracklisting on the inside left of the digipak, this will mean it is adjacent to panel with the disc on and in easy view for the audience to see which track their desired is. We once again went with the simple design continueing with the theme of the green grass bottom and blue sky background making it blend into the rest of the digipak extremely well. We have also continued the use of the font style from the front cover and the spine. This is once again because we feel that it fits so well with the style of the digipak and the video. There is a new addition to the design which comes in the form of a bee. This bee features a few times in our music video and we thought it would be a great way to take up space and add some nice detail to the page.
Digipak
This is the back cover for our Digipak, we wanted to continue on with the minimalistic theme that we had on our poster and front cover. We thought that it would a nice unusual idea if we had the exact same design as the front cover, only the main character had his back turned to the audience so that you can look at both sides of the image on either side of the digipak. The have kept the green grass banner, and blue sky background running along the bottom of the page and will do throughout the rest of the digipak. We believe by using a theme such as this will create a smart and professional look.
Digipak
This is the front cover for the digipak that we designed. We decided to go for the same design as our poster as we felt that it represented the song, video and digipak really effectively. From the research that undertook about digipaks we realised that front covers were either quite simple with little detail, or very congested with lots of things going on. We believed that the more simple design works much better for what we wanted.
The design of the front cover corresponds with the storyline of our video. In the poster the main character who is dressed in shorts and a t-shirt is ready for a sunny day, however the weather has other ideas and puts a rain cloud just over him on a otherwise blue sky. Even though he has had his day rained on a smile remains on his face, which relates to the lyrics of the song and the incidents that occur in our music video. We chose that style of font because we liked its relaxed style and feels it fits nicely with the theme of the digipak.
We used mise-en-scene to try and create the illusion that the character may be quite an unluckly, unco-ordinated person. We managed this by his clothes, the way his garish green shorts do not match his uneven orange socks. We think that this has been achieved but maybe with abit more thought could of been better.
We believe that our front cover is good looking and very effective. If we had to do it again then the only thing that might change would be to try and create a bigger emphasis on the clothes he is wearing, maybe having him wear odd socks, more colourful clothing and a pair of sunglasses.

Paolo Poster
This is the poster that we designed to advertise our video, digipak and the song 'Pencil Full of Lead'. We were aiming to go for quite a minimalistic poster which would get peoples attention but not be too busy and congested, and give the audience the information quickly and efficiently. The design of the poster corresponds with the storyline of our video.

We managed this by his clothes, the way his garish green shorts do not match his uneven orange socks. We think that this has been achieved but maybe with abit more thought could of been better.
We are happy with the way our poster has turned out and think that we have achieved what we set out to do, and advertise the song and the digipak accurately and effectively.

Digi-packs
As part of our ancillary task we need to create a digi-pack for our CD/DVD to go in. We have looked in to creating some fold out ones made out of carbored. With a sort of '3 way' fold with the CD in the middle and images, lists of tracks and artist information. An example of this is:
There is also a more unusual kind of digipack. This one folds out in 6 ways, giving us chance to put more information and pictures in it

Update 2/3/11
So, we have just under 4 weeks untill we have to have our music video and everything done. We are close to finishing our video, we just need to finsh off our blue screen bits and then finish the editing. The ancillary tasks, making the advert and dvd cover, are about to be started and we have been doing research in to them.
Adverts
We are looking at making an advert to advertise the album that the song come from. This type of advert would typically be seen in a magazine, or newspaper. On it, it will include the name of the artist, the name of the album, and picture representing the artist. It may also include days for when the album/ single/ tour is out and other information such as website addresses. Here are a few we have looked at to get some ideas:

Rise of the Director
The director started to become a much bigger part iun the music video when at the end of 1992 MTV began to list the director of the video when it came on. I am going to look into this by investigating three of the most influential music video directors there is; Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze and Mark Romanek.
Michel Gondry
As well as music videos this french director has created a long list of short films, feature films, television commercials and is a accomplished screen writer. His directing career started out by making music videos for his current band, from this caught the attention of succesful music artist 'Bjork' who then asked him to make a series of music videos for him. From this Michel went on to direct a massive list of videos for artists including 'The Rolling Stones', 'Kanye West' and 'The Chemical Brothers', a list showing great diversity in his ability to create videos for a series of music genres. As well as success in music videos he also holds the record for the most amount of awards won by a television commercial. In all of films, music videos and commercials he is recognised and complemented on his inventive visual style and manipulation of mise-en-scene.
Spike Jonze
Born in America Spike is a extremely successful director with his creations ranging all the way from Big budgeted feature movies, to skateboard films. Jonze has been awarded many times including awards in the 'MTV Music Video Awards' with Fatboy Slim's 'Rockafella Skank'. As well as Fatboy Slim he has also directed music videos for 'Daft Punk', 'R.E.M.', 'Notorious B.I.G.' and 'Tenacious D', once again showing a great diversity in his creative styles. His biggest project to date has been the film 'Where the wild things are' which had a huge budget of $1,000,000 and made a even more colossal $77,000,000 return in the box office, thus showing Jonze's diversity between small short films and box office hits.
Mark Romanek
The American director began his career with a feature length film called 'Static' in 1985, the following year his music video career began when he signed on with 'Satellite Films'. One of his most noted videos was for rock band 'Nine Inch Nails' and their song 'Closer', a video which it's critical acclaim can only be match by it's critical contraversy as some described it as demonic and disturbed. However, Romanek went on to win his first grammy for Michael Jackson's video 'Scream'. Over the years he has built up a huge back catalouge and is now looked upon as one of the most successful music video directors of all time.

Lyrics of our chosen song - Pencil Full of Lead
1, 2, 3, 4
I got a sheet for my bed,
And a pillow for my head
I got a pencil full of lead,
And some water for my throat
I've got buttons for my coat; and sails on my boat
So much more than I needed before
I got money in the meter and a two bar heater
Now it's getting hotter;
Oh it's oly getting sweeter
I got legs on my chairs and a head full of hear
Pot and a pan
And some shoes on my feet;
I got a shelf full of books and most of my teeth
A few pairs of socks and a door with a lock
I got food in my belly and a license for my telly
And nothing's going to bring me down
I got a nice guitar and tyres on my car
I got most of the means; and scripts for the scenes
I'm out and about, so I'm in with a shout
I got a fair bit of chat but better than that
Food in my belly and a license for my telly
And nothing's going to bring me down
Nothing's going to bring me down
But best of all (best of all)
I've got my baby
She's mighty fine and says she's all mine
And nothing's going to bring me down
Best of all
I've got my baby
She's mighty fine and says she's all mine
And nothing's going to bring me down
Not today, no, no
I got a sheet for my bed,
And a pillow for my head

Treatment Sheet: Proposal for music video
The following is our treatment sheet for the music video we will create....
Proposed Title/Song: The title of our song we have chosen to create a video for is 'Pencil Full of Lead' by the artist 'Paolo Nutini'.
Synopsis: No matter what happens to him he remains happy and with a smile on his face and a spring in his step.
Of Song Lyrics: The lyrics of the song represent our synopsis for the video, by saying how happy he is and no matter what happens throughout the day, nothing is going to bring him down.
Proposed Storyline and Characters: Our idea for a storyline is to reverse the lyrics in the song which state that everything is going right, and instead have everything go wrong for our main charcater. Yet even though all these unfortunate events keep happening to him he remains happy, until the final scenes where his girlfriend finishes with him over text.
Setting(time & date): The timing of the footage will be throughout daylight hours beginning in the morning at breakfast time. The settings will range from rooms in his house such as his bedroom and kitchen, to public outside places including a car park and gardens.
Length(time & shots): The length of the video will need to be is 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The length of each of the shots shall be quite short but we will make up the time by shooting alot of scenes and using fast snappy editing.
Format: Mini DV and then edited using Final Express
Style:
The genre of the song is hybrid of influences from Jazz, Blues and Indie Rock. This gives off a very upbeat and joyful sound to the song. This style of music is rather uncommon in the UK singles charts.
The type of shots will be very short and snappy mixed with alot of different camera angles. Angles and styles of shots that we will include in our shooting will be; Close ups, Long shots, worms eye view, panning shots, POV as well as a range of others.
There will be plenty of movement and action going on in our shots and it will all be very fast paced to co-incide with the song. We might even think about speeding the shots up in editing once filmed.
We will match our shots into the beat of the music so that events happen in time. We will also match the pace of the action with the fast pace of the song.
We will think about using a few samples such as an alarm clock at the beginning of the video to.
There will be a narrative that runs throughout the video and will only include one character. All action that happens in the narrative will be appear as it is happening in the present tense and there will be no use of flashbacks or past tense filming. As well as the narrative that runs throughout the video, there will be a band performance, but instead of a conventional band we are going to be using a blue screen and the same character for each instrument. We will then import each individual shot of the musician onto the same background.
Target Audience: The audience that we will be aiming to reach out to will be the fans of the song 'Pencil Full of Lead'. We imagine that there won't be an immediate age range for our audience but any age up from young teenagers.
Technical Aspects: For our production we shall designate adequate timing for our filming and our editing. The only specific responsibility in our group will be for Tom who is acting as the main and only character throughout the video.
For technical equipment we will be using Sony Handycams and also for the band sequences will be using a Blue screen and then harnessing it's benefits with the use of Final Cut Express editing suite.
Resources:
We only have one character throughout the whole video, and we will set certain dates which we will film on for each scene. To get to the locations we intend to use we will need to arrange transport to and from the place.
Rationale:
The video we are going to create is worth making for entertainment purposes. Another reason that music videos are worth making is to promote the song and artist.

Director Corin Hardy and his views on making the video Pencil Full Of Lead
My aim with this video was to set up a situation where a clay Paolo would live in a real world and behave just like a real person. Once the viewer has accepted that, I then wanted to break the rules I had devised for myself and see what goes on when a clay Paolo just pushes it a bit too far.
“I got very lucky with the animators. Fantastic Mr Fox had just wrapped and the lead animator Mark Waring, and Andy Gent – who built all the puppets for the film – were both available and agreed to do the video.
It was shot in a TV studio previously graced by Gloria Hunniford’ chat show, and somehow this felt strangely fitting. We shot each take in two versions, one with a stand-in Paolo dancer and then one without. The animation was matched to the stand-in wherever possible and this helped us get the very real movement into the clay Paolo that I wanted.
The animation schedule was brutal. We had three weeks to animate and I pretty much moved into Clapham Rd Studios. Due to the animation needing to be composited into live action, it had to be 25 frames a second which gives the movement a beautiful rich feel, but is really tough work and there are no short cuts.
The post happened as we went along, and it was inspiring to see the shots come back 24 hours later bedded into the film and actually see the laborious work coming to life.”

The post happened as we went along, and it was inspiring to see the shots come back 24 hours later bedded into the film and actually see the laborious work coming to life.”
Blue Screen
In our video we will use some band shots, with Tom playing each member of the band. In order to do this we will use blue screen and merge the images together, to get the effect. Tom will be using a variety of instruments, including a saxophone, drums, guitar and xylophone.
The blue screen will look something like this:
Recce Shots
These are some of the locations that we have chosen to do some of our filming. These will be from the second set of scenes, where our actor will make his way in to town.

Textual analysis- Mali
I am analysing the music video of Beyonce’s ‘Crazy in Love’. The genre of the song is pop and the video was directed by Jake Nava.
The genre characteristics of a pop song include a dance routine, song performance and the main ‘good-looking’ singer wearing revealing clothing. In this video you can see Beyonce wearing short dresses so that the male audience want her and the female audience want to be her. The dance routine is easy to follow.
The relationship between the lyrics and the video show that there are strong references to each other. This is because when she sings ‘you’re so crazy in love’ she used arm movements that point towards the camera seeming that the audience is the person that she is singing about.
The video is from the first song that Beyonce released after she split from her band, Destiny’s Child. The song show that not only is she a song vocal singer, she is also ‘sexy’ and can dance well. Throughout the video she changes clothing several times, each outfit more revealing than the last, keeping the audience wanting to see more. At the beginning of the video she can be seen rolling around which promotes voarisum.

Here is our risk assessment sheets that we filled out to ensure that there is minimum chance of anyone getting injured whilst creating our video.
Storyboard
Here is our story board that shows the order of events of things that will happen in our music video, which we all contributed to. We will also include bandshots inbetween some of these shots, however we haven't yet decided where our band shots will be fitted in.

Our New Song and Artist
Due to no reply from the artist of our first choice of song, we have chosen on the different song of 'Pencil Full of Lead' by 'Paolo Nutini'.
Paolo Nutini is a singer songwriter that originates from Scotland who released his debut album in 2006 and was named 'These Streets'. The album which the song we want to use comes off though is his second album named 'Sunny Side Up' which was released in summer 2009 and made it to number 1 in the UK top 40.
His debut album was noted for having a much more 'Poppy' sound to it whereas the album 'Sunny Side Up' went more experimental and brought in influences from Jazz, Funk and Indie.
The single 'Pencil Full of Lead' was released on November 2nd and peaked in the UK charts at #17. I think that the most suitable music genre which this song falls into is a hybrid of Indie and Jazz Funk.
We have decided to use this song because we feel we have a wide range of ideas that we could use for our music video.
