Rise of the Director

The director started to become a much bigger part iun the music video when at the end of 1992 MTV began to list the director of the video when it came on.  I am going to look into this by investigating three of the most influential music video directors there is; Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze and Mark Romanek.

Michel Gondry
As well as music videos this french director has created a long list of short films, feature films, television commercials and is a accomplished screen writer.  His directing career started out by making music videos for his current band, from this caught the attention of succesful music artist 'Bjork' who then asked him to make a series of music videos for him.  From this Michel went on to direct a massive list of videos for artists including 'The Rolling Stones', 'Kanye West' and 'The Chemical Brothers', a list showing great diversity in his ability to create videos for a series of music genres.  As well as success in music videos he also holds the record for the most amount of awards won by a television commercial.  In all of films, music videos and commercials he is recognised and complemented on his inventive visual style and manipulation of mise-en-scene.

Spike Jonze
Born in America Spike is a extremely successful director with his creations ranging all the way from  Big budgeted feature movies, to skateboard films.  Jonze has been awarded many times including awards in the 'MTV Music Video Awards' with Fatboy Slim's 'Rockafella Skank'.  As well as Fatboy Slim he has also directed music videos for 'Daft Punk', 'R.E.M.', 'Notorious B.I.G.' and 'Tenacious D', once again showing a great diversity in his creative styles.  His biggest project to date has been the film 'Where the wild things are' which had a huge budget of $1,000,000 and made a even more colossal $77,000,000 return in the box office, thus showing Jonze's diversity between small short films and box office hits.

Mark Romanek
The American director began his career with a feature length film called 'Static' in 1985, the following year his music video career began when he signed on with 'Satellite Films'.  One of his most noted videos was for rock band 'Nine Inch Nails' and their song 'Closer', a video which it's critical acclaim can only be match by it's critical  contraversy as some described it as demonic and disturbed.  However, Romanek went on to win his first grammy for Michael Jackson's video 'Scream'.  Over the years he has built up a huge back catalouge and is now looked upon as one of the most successful music video directors of all time.
